Are all IDE 40 pin ribbon cables alike (cable select does notmatter)?
I have a 40-pin IDE ribbon cable with two connectors on it one in the
middle and one at the end (and of course the end for the connector for
the mother board so three total). I don’t need or care if it is cable
select. It came out of a computer that was maybe ten years old. I am
not sure what ATA standard it had.
I need a cable for an Ultra ATA/33 in another computer. The cable fits
on the hard drive so can I use?

ALL IDE cables are 40 pin, newer ones have 80 conductors. For ATA 33 any
cable will do.

Yes, just jumper the hard drive as master or slave or master with
slave present, as required.

ATA-100 cables are made to a different standard, so a "good" ATA-33 cable might
work with ATA-100, while a "bad" ATA-33 cable might not.

when cable select first came out the enter connection was for the master,
the end for the slave.
Then, it was changed to master on the end, slave in the middle. So, it
depends on how old the cable is.
