I'm looking to buy or build a 64 bit Vista system. I do photography
(photoshop) and I figure I need a new system and 3gb is just not enough so
64 bit Vista is it.
my criteria:
Core 2 Duo
8 or better yet 16gb support - Not particular about the type of memory
should I be?
6+ SATA (some external would be nice)
6+ USB
Firewire
Gbit Network
Good dual monitor supported video card - triple would be a bonus. At some
point I may double up on the video card - (I'm not a gamer).

Sounds like a plan. Just be aware that if you intend to run Vista, you
have to buy Vista, and then send away for the 64-bit version (order it
from Microsoft). I wasn't aware of that when I purchased Vista. From
reading the box, it appeared that I was buying both 32 and 64-bit
versions. When I went to install it on 64-bit hardware, I got a nasty
surprise. Yes, it will install and run OK. But the 64-bit code is not
there.
So -your- build sequence might be a bit tricky. That is, you might have
a problem trying to install with too much RAM, until you actually
receive the 64-bit code. -Dave

Whatever you choose, make sure that you could find the
64-bit drivers for the hardware you wanna buy.

That is not entirely correct. Most of retail versions of Vista allow you to
run either 32bit or 64bit versions using the same license key.
However only the ultimate version includes the 64bit media in the box.
Others needing the 64bit media can either borrow it from a friend or order
it from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...a/default.mspx
OEM versions of Vista can be purchased in either 32bit or 64bit media but
the license is only good for that version.
