Default 4 dimm slowdown

When I fill all 4 memory slots with GEIL 1 Gb modules, systems becomes very
slow, i.e. unsable.

With 3 or less modules, no problems.

Any ideas?

Addition: All modules are in order, because I checked them individually in
original pairs. Newest BIOS is also installed.

Depending on the motherboard I would suggest that you go into the BIOSand up
the VDimm voltage by 0.1 or 0.2 volts. It was the only way i could get my
old Epox to recognise the second Dimm.
Both worked individually and even overclocked the same but together they
either crashed the whole system or caused it to run erractically.

Thanx, but I have a no-frills Intel mobo (965RY) so any tampering with
voltage is out.

A bigger Power Supply.

Other components are: E-vga 8800 GTS Superclocked, Fatality X-fi, WD Raptor
30 Gb, Barracuda 160, Maxtor 250, Samsung DVD-RW S-ATA, C2D 6320, Intel 965
RY mobo, Tagan 580 W.

It doesn't seem as a very power-hungry system.

....and 580w /should/ be enough. Much USB plugged in?

quite a few usb devices.

But many of them with own power supply (external HDDs and DVD-RW). Others
are not very power-draining - mouse, printer (which is rarely on) and a
Bluetooth keyboard.

What differences do you notice when CPUZ is run, with your 4GB
configuration and with less than 4GB ?

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

What aspect of the system is slow ? It is hard drive speed ?
You can test the hard drive speed with HDTach. If you slip into
PIO mode, HDTach will only report about 4MB/sec or so speed.

http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public...request=HdTach

And between ctrl-alt-delete (Task Manager) and something like
RMClock, you can monitor what the CPU speed is like.

http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml
http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_225_bin.exe

A typical RMclock display is here (second picture down):

Assuming you are a 32-bit Windows user, then if you go to Control
Panel -> Device Manager, you will see a bunch of devices sitting just
under the 4GB memory limit (FFFFFFFF). These include the remapped
addresses for the video card and BIOS EEPROM. Maybe one of these
devices is causing the problem.
