Default Why can't I have all the resolutions available for my big monitor?

I bought a HP pavilion dv6108nr laptop featuring a fast cpu, a intel
integrated video card that can share up to 128M video ram.

When I work home, I usually hook a big sony 21" GDM-5410 monitor. I want to
go to 1880X1400 @85HZ(I found this information on the web), but the biggest
I can go is 1600X1200@85.

Can anyone help me go larger?

You can only go as high as the monitor supports. If
1600x1200 is all your monitor can do then you'll have to
replace it.

You mean the video graphics card.

No, oddly enough, I meant what I wrote.

Then you didn't look up the spec of his monitor! Goes upto 2048 x 1536 @
75Hz Maximum Resolution.
Needs inf file for the monitor.

Wasn't that obvious with what I wrote?
I'm not going to research every bit of gear nor should
anyone else do this redundant work when the OP can instead
provide the specs applicable to the scenario.

On second thoughts, these data don't look right. If the OP can get
1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz, then the horizontal frequency must be around 1200
x 85 (non-interlaced) or 1200 x 85/2 (interlaced).

The first result is 102kHz which is outside the monitor's horizontal
frequency range, and the second requires a refresh rate of 42.5Hz
which is outside the monitor's vertical frequency range.

OTOH, 1880 x 1400 could be made to fall within the monitor's H&V range
provided that the refresh rate was less than 58Hz (or 116Hz
interlaced), but the image in either case may not be clear, or flicker
free.

The Intel integrated video is too underpowered to handle higher resolutions.
Integrated video is rarely a good choice. (It consists of a $10 chip on
the motherboard. ) Time to install a separate high quality video card, if
you want to run high resolutions on an external monitor.
