Default AGP 8x in a 4x mobo

Some cards specify both 4x and 8x and most only specify 8x.
Can I use any 8x video card in a 4x mobo slot? I just want it to work,
don't care if it's half speed. In the future I'll probably use it in an
8x board, just can't see buying a 4x only card at this point.
I know about PCI-E and have that on another system.
