Addition: All modules are in order, because I checked them individually in
original pairs. Newest BIOS is also installed.

The solution may depend on what OS you used.
(E.g. Win98 requires configuration tweaks to use
more than half a Gb RAM, other OSs may be
similarly limted.)

i use Win XP both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and they are both acting up.

Don't run the OS at all until you have confirmed stability
with Memtest86+. At this point you may have already caused
file corruption and may need to do a clean OS install after
you have gotten the memory stable.
Try manually setting the memory timings to higher (slower)
values and retest w/Memtest86+

I've tried to set slower memory timings (6-6-6-18 instead of default/earlier
5-5-5-18) and then the system wouldn't even boot to BIOS screen - it just
beeps three times indicating some problem with memory.

Then try something other than 6-6-6-18. Maybe it just won't
work and you'll have to return the modules. If that's the
case try to get different modules, not just replacement with
same make and model as you'd likely have same problem with
same replacement modules.
You might check to see if fellow users of that board have
any workaround like other bios setting changes or modules
known to work in 4 x 1GB configuration. I mean check at web
forums like http://forums.pcper.com , browsing to the
correct motherboard category then if a search turns up
nothing, post the topic including specifics- the specific
memory not just brand and quantity, the specific
motherboard, the specific bios version, etc.
Many less expensive motherboards and/or RAM sticks have serious timing
problems when trying to coordinate four sticks of RAM. Using just three
sticks solves this problem usually.

This guy had same problem. You might want to read this: http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=439809

I was just about to suggest something that appears to have been
covered in that thread.
Assuming you are a 32-bit Windows user, then if you go to Control
Panel -> Device Manager, you will see a bunch of devices sitting just
under the 4GB memory limit (FFFFFFFF). These include the remapped
addresses for the video card and BIOS EEPROM.
