Weird boot behavour

Hi,

This is what happens when I try to boot my PC (stats below):
1. Fans start spinning, HD and Power LED go on.
2. Than it shuts down (this is after ±2 seconds) Didn't show anything
on the screen, no POST beep codes.
3. ±3 seconds later it starts up again by itself
4. Sometimes it boots normal at this point, sometimes it shuts down
again and tries yet again until it boots normal.

I'm not an expert, but I thought when booting this happens:
1. PSU performs self-test and send "Power Good" signal to mobo.
2. Timer chip stops sending reset signal to CPU.
3. CPU load ROM BIOS
--- At this point it beeps when something goes wrong ---
4. Execute BIOScode; BIOS performs some tests (beeps on error)

Since the power LED is on, the error must happen when the CPU tries to
load and/or execute the ROM BIOS code. What happens normally if an
error is issued here? Does it shut down and start up like it happens
in my case?

I'd try another power supply and see what happens

This is a common bug with P35 chipsets. You can wait and
see if a bios update cures it, but for the time being are
you overclocking? That will introduce further variables and
if it doesn't happen overclocking, or without ANY bios
changes, you may have to choose between bearing this or
switching chipsets (motherboards).

If it keeps trying it's possible your memory isn't entirely
compatible, you could try different manually set timings or
different memory, but at least run memtest86+ overnight to
be sure it's at least stable if/when it does boot and run
that.

Normally I'd agree that a methodical interpretation of
what's happening might be useful, but in this case with P35
chipset, it is an expected issue. If you are running any
particular memory:bus ratio you might also try a different
ratio, but you didn't give any details of this.

At least check on a bios update, but be aware a new bios
isn't always better than what you have or a prior bios.

Thanks for your reply. I'll do the memtest and update the BIOS, see
whether this helps. (Btw, I'm not overclocking.)

Would you have any reference for this "common bug with P35 chipsets"
or is it personal experience?

users of your board make/model. I don't know which are most
populated by MSI owners these days but here is one example,

MSI might have their own forum these days? Just an idea, I
haven't checked for one.
