Default Trouble replacing HDD

I'm working on an IBM Thinkpad Z61t laptop. The system had a Toshiba
100GB Serial ATA hard disk drive, and the system has been in for
repairs twice in the past 6 months for BSOD issues relating to HDD/
file system. My boss and I decided it would be best to replace the
drive.

We purchased a 160GB SATA hard drive as a replacement, and cloned the
old drive with Acronis. However, when attempting to boot off the new
drive, the system just shows a black screen with a white text cursor
blinking in the top left corner. The system is still able to boot
without a problem if we put the old drive in, it's only when the new
drive is installed that there's a problem.

The startup process is not getting to a point where I can use F8 to
use Window's Safe Mode or another feature. A repair installation via
a Windows XP CD did not change the situation. Nor did updating the
BIOS with a newer one via the IBM site.

Suggestions?

Did you go into the bios and set the new drive as the
primary boot device?
