In the early DOS era, certainly before directories were invented, there was
a command called Recover. A friend who worked for Thames Water used it on
his work PC to see what it did. It replaced the name of every file on the
machine with a number. The PC was totally stuffed and had to be wiped and
completely restored. He wasn't popular.
