Default monitor problem

The screen goes black except for a horizontal white line in the middle. ( it's not the vid card)

Help is appreciated

More details are also appreciated. We need to know all the
specifics of the system. Since you didn't bother to provide
this, you can't be very serious about finding a solution.

How could the system details be of use in this case? The fault is clearly
in the monitor itself. I had this happen on a 22" Iiyama diamondtron CRT a
few years ago. It had to be junked, after spending quite a bit on having it
looked at.

The OP has opened a photo of a white washing line, taken with flash at
night. More details would be helpful!!

Yes I should've written monitor not system. If a monitor is
a few years old it is seldom cost effective to have it
professionally repaired, though these days it is getting
harder to find cost effective quality CRTs, so it might make
more sense to spend more today than in past years if one is
really resistant to moving to an LCD.
