I am switching my old computer from IDE hard drives to SATA hard drives.
Apparently, IDE/PATA drives are being phased out and would not be suitable
for long-term storage of data.
I read that Maxtor (Seagate) drives have a tendency to run louder and hotter
than Western Digital drives. Is this correct or is this another urban
legend? WD proudly proclaims: 'Cool Running, Ultra Quiet, and fast".
Advertising hype or reality?

Test results here, under "idle noise". Site uses a popup advert, and
you can kill your browser, to dump it without having to view it.

You are probably going to get lots of replies here with people's personal
preference over the 2 brands. I personally won't touch Maxtor again after 2
faulty drives. I am a WD man now - had 5 of them over the years and never
failed once.
I would say, if you want quiet and low power then look at either the new
green WD drives or the Samsung Spinpoint range. What capacity / budget are
you looking at?

I have a similar experience, no maxtor or seagate for me.

I am currently running,
5 Maxtor's all 3.5" ( 2 x 80, 1 x 200, 1 x 250, 1 x 30) up to 8 years old
with no problems.
1 x Seagate 250, 3.5" (C Drive) new no problems.
2 x WD 250's, 3.5" (C & D Drive) new and very quiet.
1 x Hitachi 60, 2.5" (C Drive) ........4 years old, just gone bad.
Capacity around 200-300 GB, budget around $ 100. Old skinflint :-)

And what about performance? If that doesn't matter, then just get anything
cheap! The new WD 320GB drive is good performance. Make sure its the new one
as it uses the larger platters (Same range as the new 640GB one). Not sure
of model numbers right now though - its bedtime, sorry!

Maxtor/Seagate drives are not very loud, only someone with a
very quiet room and custom designed low-noise system would
hear a significant difference from a mere one drive. They
do run slightly hotter but in any (Otherwise) properly
cooled system, where it has the correct design of having the
front intake air flowing through the hard drive rack and the
drive has at least 1 cm of space above and below it (not
wedged against another hard drive), the typical consumer
level 7K2 Seagate/Maxtor drives run plenty cool enough for
it to not be a concern.
However, if you had a special, unusual need for extra power
and heat reduction, WD does make a (greenpower?) lower power
series of their drives that you might look into. I don't
recall if the pricing is similar, if it is and you have a
hot environment it might be worth a look at those, but for
the most part the differences that manufacturers advertise
are mostly hype, not significant in a typical PC &
environment.
