I own a Trendnet TK-208 KVM switch, which was working perfectly with
all the equipments I connected to it in the past.
Yesterday, a friend of mine brought his HP Pavilion a1747c tower for
maintenance purposes. I was surprised to find that the keyboard and
mouse (both with PS/2 connectors) won't work at all when connected via
the KVM switch, neither with the OS running (Vista Home Premium) nor
when booting from a CD.
I made sure the BIOS was at the latest version (5.07) and that PS/2
mouse is enabled in the BIOS settings.
BTW, plugging the keyboard and the mouse directly in the computer works
as expected.
Using the KVM switch with any other computer still works, so I guess
it's not the switch which is defective.

Is Legacy support enabled in the bios? Is the switch set on the HP as
it boots?

There's no such option in the BIOS. The only option is "PS/2 Mouse
support" with choices : Enabled / Disabled / Auto. Enabled is the
current value. I tried with Auto, at no avail.

I tried both set on the HP and on the other computer; neither works.
Hmmm, no Legacy settings in bios, KVM works perfectly with 2 other PCs
and KVM plugs are correctly connected but the HP still doesn't work??
There are inexpensive PS/2-USB adapters you can buy and try with your KVM
to HP side. NO gaurantee those will work but for 10USD or so they're
worth a try?

Your symptoms do not really necessarily match this problem.. Of one
computer , not just not working, but screwing up the whole thing.
Nevertheless, to be sure,
Do this test..
turn them all off (such that if you hit the power button they will
turn on)
Now plug a ps2 keyboard into each of them. See if there are
differences between the computers. Specifically if perhaps the
keyboard flashes when you plug it into the funny one, but does not
flash with the others.
(if the computers were all on then when the keyboard in plugged into
the Ps2 port, it would flash with all of them)
There is an issue with motherboard/BIOSs set to 5V SB(e.g. power going
through ps2 port even when computer is off, or power going through usb
port, or both), clashing with KVM switches that get their power from
Ps2(or USB).
The KVM switch thinks the computer is on, when infact it is not.
Note- just because a KVM Switch has an ACDC adaptor does not mean it
does not get its power from Ps2. I had one that got its power from
Ps2. And if you wanted to give it additional power, then you could use
the ACDC.
HP computer doesn't work with a KVM switch..
