Default Hot hard drive

I installed a Maxtor SATA 500 GB hard drive.

It runs quite a bit warmer (hotter) than my 80 GB IDE hard drive. I cannot
touch it for more than 5 seconds, without letting go.

Is this normal for such a big hard drive? Is the temp of a drive depending
on the size of the drive?

Thanks

Maxtor (now Seagate) have a history of running warm/hot. Just make sure you
have good case cooling and you should be OK.

I run 6 or 7 Maxes without problems, some in external enclosures with less
venting than desktop cases and they are 6, 7 & 8 years old now.

I did build a system last year with 2 x Sata WD's and they are very nice,
quiet and cool so have changed my allegiance now.

That seems a little hotter than usual, though ultimately you
should improve the case cooling and then see how much it
helped. It does seem to need be kept cooler as drives can
do ok running pretty warm but beyond a certain point even if
it doesn't kill the drive it can lock up the logic and cause
dropouts from access or corruption.

The capacity as it bears on the # of platters needed to
reach that capacity can cause more motor heat all else being
equal, but there's still variations from brand to brand and
model.
