Default Drives & Burners

I have a DVD Rom and a DVD Burner on my system , they have both disappeared
from my computer. They both accept disks and spin them, I have checked the
cables are connected inside. When I reinstall them windows recognises them
and tries to install them ,then says it cannot find them.in 'system it shows
their names with a ?, I'm running XP Pro
Any ideas!

Thanks.
