Default DD 5.1 Via Coaxial Out....HOW?

I recently built a rig which has built in optical and coaxial SPDIF output on the mobo (Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3) and I cannot figure out how to get digial out to my reciever (Sony STR-DE997).

When I hook it up via coax to my receiver all I can get is PCM 48. It doesn't matter if I'm watchin a movie or just playing mp3s. I've tried everything I can think of to fix this (drivers, powerdvd setting, audi mixer setting). I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong since I'm new to the whole PC audio scene.

I am able to get surround sound by running the analog outs on my mobo to my recievers multi-channel input but I'd really like to cut down on all the cables....plus when I go through the analog my subwoofer sounds weak even on max and it is surely no wimp (Klipsch 12") Also, on analog I don't get that cool blue light lit up on my reciever....I mean aesthetics counts for something as well.

Thanks for anyhelp

Perhaps I need a newer DVD drive? Do newer ones have an SPDIF output that I could hook to the mobos SPDIF input and just use the Coaxial to pass the signal through to my receiver for decoding....again, I'm not sure how all this works with PCs....

You wouldn't get surround on an MP3 since it's 2 channels.
Your (motherboard?) sound might offer some virtualized mode
or the receiver might instead. For source with more
channels, you'd need a sound card that supports Dolby
Encoded output. Google should find some.

No newer drive is needed, your DVD drive passes the video
and audio as files over the (PATA/IDE or SATA) data cable
which the OS decodes and passes to the sound card for
output.
