Computer will not boot, with harddrive OneTouch 4 ??

My computer will not boot when I have my Maxtor OneTouch 4 plugged
in the USB. If I connect the hardrive after the computer have started
up,
it works just fine. What is the problem ?

I have the same issue when I plug in my flash drive on my laptop. It
won't boot. Thinks its the primary drive.
But my desktop has an external usb drive and I can boot with it
connected all day.

I'll be interested to hear if you get any solid answers.

The computer may have USB Mass Storage support in the BIOS. It
may be trying to boot from that drive, and failing. By
disconnecting the drive, the BIOS no longer trips over that
drive, during startup.

I've also heard of computers, getting stuck on the 9-in-1 USB
card reader, for a similar reason. Disconnecting the card reader,
magically allows the computer to boot.

Is there a fix for this ? I haven't read of an account, of a
way to modify the contents of the external hard drive, so the
BIOS won't poke at it. But maybe someone has figured it out.
It could be, that the partition is marked as "active", and
maybe that has something to do with it.

You can disable this support in bios.
You only need that if you want to boot from usb.

Actually this relates to the 750G Maxtor Onetouch 4 Plus.

Installed OK and system recognizes it.

Problem is that the PC will not boot - I mean not at all - if the
drive is powered and connected. It doesn't even get to the Windows XP
startup screen.

I spoke to tech support and they described this as "normal". You have
to physically disconnect the drive from the PC BEFORE you try to boot
up - otherwise you will never get there. It wouldn't be so bad if the
device had a simple on-off power switch (like my older MAXTOR that
does not have this problem)but it does not. You have to unplug either
the power or the USB cable. Wait until the Start-up routine is
complete, then plug it back in again.

As I said under Pros - I consider the incovenience of this device to
far outwiegh any good features that it might have. So..... it's back
to Best Buy to get rid of a turkey.

The harddrive works perfect on my laptop computer. I guess that it has
nothing
to do with the harddrive. Maybe it has something to do with my other
computer.

that's why I build my own externals with ON/OFF switches...........
