Default cloning with removable hard disks still possible with SATA?

In my current PC I use removable HD's.
When something goes wrong (and it regularly does - I experiment a lot), I
take out the HD tray & replace it with a clone.
All I have to to it change the switch from slave to master.
Then I clone it again & put it safely away.

I'm thinking about a new pc..
I read that with SATA there's no master of slave.
I'm confused: can still do my my swapping of cloned HD's with SATA?

Why would you have to switch it from master to slave? The
replacement should be the same (master, or slave) not
needing to be changed.

Yes, there is no master and slave so you just plug in the
cable.
