tonight. after ages of working beautifully.
minus a few probs with my graphics card being too powerful to run
older games.
i believe either my board or my psu has carked it
600w SHAW PSU picked up from MSY, box hill.
admittedly it was el cheap. but it was purchased about 8 - 10 weeks
ago.
if that.
now i don't believe my system wouldve been dragging much on the psu.
i can definitely smell something inside the box that isnt right.
but yeah playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R earlier... and had been doing so for a
good 2 hours.
then all of a sudden. power goes out. first assumption was a fuse in
the house must have blown
yet everything else plugged into that power board was fine and
working.
monitor, amp, sub woofer.
i look inside the case. the little green light is gone
now im paranoid the psu doing this may have destroyed my motherboard
(asus m2n-e sli).
thankfully all of this is still under warranty.
seeing as i got most the parts in early september.
still not too cheery right now.
any reasons this could have happened?
other than the obvious

No green light on the motherboard, means no +5VSB is coming from the
power supply. With no +5VSB flowing, the motherboard cannot send the
PS_ON# signal to the power supply to turn it on.
It sounds like a power supply failure. It could be the main fuse inside
the power supply blew. And the fuse would only blow, if something
significant inside the supply was damaged. No, you don't need to open
it up and play around :-) Stay out of there.
Move up the quality ladder this time. No more $25 600W power supplies :-)

If you subtract the obvious answer, what's left to consider?
People don't pay a lot more for fun or vanity (in most
cases?), a PSU is a pretty boring component but nontheless
important.
I'd suspect your high voltage (chopper) transistor(s) blew
out. It's not likely worth repairing, at least not for
reuse in a system exceeding it's designed (true) capacity.
Cheap is cheap... I would start diagnosing by replacing the PSU with a
known working, Good Quality PSU and see if that solves the problem.

im thinking ill get my replacement psu today. so ive got something to
tide me through to next pay day
in a weeks time where it may be worth $160 or so at msy.
Yeah, I'd take a Delta at any given wattage before many of
the brands they list as supposedly better. IMO, 500W of
Delta > most other brands except PC Power & Cooling and
Zippy. To rank Thermaltake, Hipower, Enermax, Ultra and
Antec above them is ludicrous, IMO... just one example.

1. Don't try and power this up again, as you may kill anything that
isn't dead already.
2. PSUs fail. It happens. They can also take everything with them. This
seems more frequent with El Cheapo PSUs.
3. Take a multimeter and test your PSU. There're instructions on how to
do this in this group's archives via google groups. It's better to test
PSUs with a load attached, but unless you have a couple of devices
you're wiling to risk killing, then I'd just be quick about it and short
the appropriate connectors with a paper clip. Remember: have this PSU
disconnected from the drives, motherboard, etc, unless you're willing to
take a chance of killing them.
4. A UPS that acts to help 'smooth' power to a PC may be a valuable
investment.
5. Report back and let us know how it goes, and what the results are!
