You can review specifications but The GA-965G-DS3 is built with Intel
ICH8 Southbridge, which does not support RAID. You will need Intel ICH8R
to support RAID arrays. I prefer 965P-DQ6 and then 965P-DS4 for RAID
GIGABYTE SATA2 chip does support data stripe (RAID 0) and data mirror
(RAID 1) but you will have less problems, more features and better
performance with ICH8R. You will need to read to make educated decision
but RAID 0 for OS with a third drive for data will give best performance
on DS3. I would not recommend RAID 0 without third drive for data and/or
drive image/backup performed often.
RAID 1 will give redundancy for important data at a cost of drive space
and performance.
I personally prefer RAID 0 for OS, RAID 5 for data and a sixth scratch
drive on ICH8R. Very good performance and redundancy for media development

I have never found any flavor of Raid to even come close to producing
benefits that justify the issues and complexity that Raid entails for a
personal desktop system.

I agree !
And 400 Gbyte (maybe x 2). What a joy when all data are lost.
I prefer to install windows (XP) on a minor primary partition (maybe
30-50 Gb) which can be backed up routinely with a backup image of
C-drive.
Having had many hd failures, over the years, and had problems with onboard
raid, I wouldnt be without my raid card. Mirror config with hotswap, but
then the card alone retails at some $500.
And yes I also have image backups, and on and off site data backups, but
then my data is important to me.
