I have XP 64 on this system already on a 40 GB HD. I installed a new
160 GB EIDe drive and try to install XP 64. XP sees the drive formats it and
starts to install. When it tries to reboot I get "A disk read error has
occured" "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
The drive is recognized in the bios.
I tried jumpering it as a single as well as cable select.
I tried creating a single partition of 80 GB.
I ran WD's latest Data Lifeguard but it granted me no insight.
Both the old 40 GB drive and the new 160 GB drive are mounted in a Kingwin
KF23-IPF IDE mobil rack. I can plug in the 40 and it works fine.
I tried installing Win2K to the 160 with the same result.
Ubuntu 7.10 installs and runs ok. (Unfortunatly I need Auto Cad 2008)

XP32 and XP64 have to be at least at Service Pack 1 to be able to
handle drives over approximately 128GB (48bit addressing). If your
XP64 install disc is the original release your best bet is to create a
slipstreamed install disc with at least SP1 or SP2 integrated.
Google for windows xp and slipstream and you'll find plenty of
instructions how to do that.
If your XP64 disc is SP1 or later then you've got another problem.
Another possibility would be to clone the 40GB drive to the 160GB
drive as long as you have at least SP1 on the 40GB drive.

Thanks me/2;
I found the info for slipstreaming, followed the directions to
slipstream SP2 and as far as I can tell all worked. Ended up with a bootable
cd that started to install XP. At reboot I received the same message as
before "A disk read error has occured" "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
I guess my next two tries would be 1) plug drive directly into cable
bypassing the mobil rack (but it does work with Ubuntu) and 2) try cloneing
the 40 GB to the 160GB drive.
