I was given a Gateway Flexatxstc Bro Essential 700C I turn on the computer
and the Gateway screen comes up and then a black screen that say CMOS
settings is wrong. However the keyboard won't work. The computer uses a USB
keyboard and mouse only. What could be wrong? How do I do anything without a
keyboard that works? I bought a new keyboard but it still won't work. Any
suggestions?
The C2032 3v lithium coin-sized motherboard battery has failed, or maybe it is
just failing.
After the CMOS failed message, does the system ask you to press F1 or F2 to
enter the BIOS setup? Even if you don't see such a message, try it and see what
happens. It is possible that the USB port(s) are fried. Try another USB port.

Yes it does say F1 setup and F9 for default settings. I can't do that if the
keyboard won't work. I will try replacing the lithium motherboard battery
and see if that works. If not, could all of the USB ports be fried? If that
is so would I have to replace the motherboard?

That is a possibility. A quick way to check this would be to plug in
something with a light on it, such as an optical mouse. That would at least
let you know that there is (or is not) power available.
Try the battery first--some systems act downright weird when their CMOS
batteries are dead. If it still does not work after that, then the USB ports
are probably bad. If you're good at soldering, you might look for a fuse or
circuit protector on the board. If someone short-circuited a USB port, such
a component may have blown in order to protect the board.
IIRC, the board in that system was a forerunner of the small form factor ITX
boards that are now all the rage for computers in a small chassis and computers
masquerading as home appliances. I may have one here, available for short money
these days.
If one USB port is fried, all of them are as a rule.
Try the battery replacement first... Ben Myers

Well I know what you are saying William. But the USB port specs doesn't
allow the port to be fused, but rather use an automatic resettable
power. Meaning if the load is excessive, the power gets turned off. When
the excessive load (or short) disappears, power is automatically
restored.
