Or if you have RealPlayer installed, it's built-in and has worked better
than anything else I've tried (and I'm no fan of Real). Can't say that
I've tried Tubesock, though.

Tubesock OSX saves as Quicktime MP4, being designed for saving iPod,
AppleTV and PSP clips--
Can't say what it does for Windows, but should be similar.

RealPlayer saves them as .flv files (as do all the Firefox hacks I've
tried), which kind of suck. I'll have to give Tubesock a try to see how
it handles them on Windows. I'd much rather have MP4.

If you use Firefox, get the addon called:
Downloadhelper 2.5.3
That's what I use. It makes .FLV files. There are several FLV
players available for free. Google for them.
Get the addon on Mozilla.com (with the addons)
If you use IE, you can find the file in the cache. It's always named
get-video (or get something, i forget now).....
You have to rename it to whatever you want, and add the .FLV
extension.
This is a clumbsy way to do it, but it works.
Firefox dont allow for this because it gives all cache files odd and
meaningless names.
I also have Opera installed, but I never looked at the cache or for
addons. I use FF the most.
I recommend Downloadhelper 2.5.3 for Firefox. Seems to work well, but
I did find that you can only save one file at a time, but that's ok
for me.

You can probably guess the right file from size and time modified.
Or dowload these 2 free programs: OrbitFLVdowloader(which captures the
video as an FLV file, and FreezFLVtoAVI/MPG/WMV (which converts it to
the file type kou want)

Further degrading the already crappy quality by lossy compressing it
again. If .flv is the "native" format, I'd just as soon have it on
that, unless it's something I feel the need to watch on something other
than my computer.

In fact the AVI turns out bigger than the FLV, hence I don't think much
detail is lost. You are starting with a rather compressed file format to
begin with.
