Default DVD to AVI or MPG?

I have an extensive collection of DVD's. Mostly Classic & latest TV
shows. I've bought them all leagally, but I have a problem. I travel
extensively, and have an Archos media player that I use to watch the
shows while I'm traveling.

Does anyone know of a program which I can use to convert a protected
DVD to .avi or .mpg? My player just plays these two formats, and with
the protection issue, I can't convert them. I have classics that I
haven't even opened yet, because of the conversion issue.
