Default writing on dvd disks?

Is it safe to use a marking pen such as Sharpie or Marks-a-Lot on a
blank DVD disk? Is there any
problem of the ink damaging the surface? If there is, are there
marking pens specifically for DVD disks that ARE safe?

There are marking pens specifically for writing on cd/dvds. I've used them
for years. Whether they are any different than a plain old Sharpie or not I
don't know. I'm sure the makers of the specialty cd/dvd markers would say
they are.

CD's are quite fragile on the top surface as the written layer is just below
a layer of laquer and any damage to this is more likely to be fatal than
damage on the side that is read.
DVD's on the other hand sandwich the written layer in between two bits of
plastic so the top surface is more robust.
All this means is you can use any pen as there no laquer layer to stuff up
with fatal results.

I have used the plain old Sharpie type pens for many years. Never caused a
problem for me.

Sharpie makes a cd/dvd marker ultra fine. Not marked permanent.
Works fine and has 2 different tips.

Water-based or alcohol I don`t know but solvents smell different.
