I suppose there might be some differences between various software programs,
(especially between Mac's and Windows programs), but to achieve major
advancements, look to the hardware.
From personal experience, I used Nero, Windows Media, Proprietary Sony
Software, and Studio, and while some were marginally faster than others, it
was only when I upgraded to a Dual Core processor, that a major advancement
was achieved, using exactly the same software. Antidotal evidence only,
suggests that the Dual Core processor is probably 30 to 40 percent faster.
(I wouldn't want to take that evidence too far, since there was a
significant upgrade to the graphics card at the same time.)
Now to contradict my own thesis, I do believe that newer versions of Studio
are faster than older versions, but even then, it pales beside hardware
upgrades.

Have you tried Nero 8?? I am running P4 with Hyperthreading, and
Nero 8 software is a giant step backward in performance. It drags.
I eventually uninstalled it and reinstalled the Nero 6 (and upgrades)
suite to get back the performance I had lost.
Sometimes inefficient programming can undo all the gains from faster
hardware.

Nero 7 Ultra..
I'm kinda "invested" in Studio. Started with 8 and I'm up to 11.
Just curious, why do you want to get it to mpg format

You can use "ConvertXtoVideo" and convert directly from .avi to video (.vob
type files). It allows for menus, variable chapterlength (3 minute, 4
minute etc.) volume setting. Resulting files can be burned right from the
program. Best of all it is quite fast.
I have been using it for a couple of years.
Good luck
