Pioneer DVR-433H-S problem playing DVDs

hi
I'm having problems with the picture breaking up when playing copied
DVDs on my Pioneer DVR-433H-S,
both copies made from downloads and from original discs.
I thought it was the media, but it happens with original copies on
dvd-rw too.
This doesn't happen when played on pc, laptop or cheap dvd player
Can anyone offer an explanation please

What brand of media and type (+ -)
If its the cheapest, try a decent brand or even writing at a slower speed.
Quality of a disk written at 4x as opposed to 16x is bound to be better.

Could be the laser is going bad.

I though that at first, but the same thing happens when the disc is
played on a friends Pioneer DVR-433H-S?
