Default No speech on DVD - why?

Hi
I'm copying a dvd and when I listen to the preview all is fine, but
when I burn it to DVD there is music and action noise but no speech
when the actors talk. This is an original DVD
I have been having this problem with several original DVDs, but not
with avi files

I have tried several decrypters - all with the same result
Would anyone know what's happening and how to fix please
Using Nero 8 for burning on vista

Martin, if you're ripping to an ".ISO" file, then the original audio is
retained, and is probably AC3. If you're playing it with Windows Media
Player, you'll need an All-In-One Codec pack from
http://www.videohelp.com to play them.

If you need MP2 audio instead, you could rip the individual files
(".IFO", ".VOB", etc), then re-author with something like MovieFactory,
which allows for MP2 audio instead of AC3. I just rename the ".VOB"
files to ".MPG" and re-join them using MovieFactory.

What program are you using to rip the DVD?
In the example you describe it sounds like you have selected the surround
track rather than the main audio track.

I have used AnyDVD, DVDFab Decrypter, dvd shrink, dvd Decrypter,
ripit4me
and then Nero 8 on Vista, I can get picture but only sometimes a
muffled sound.

Does the original DVD disc play ok with correct sound on your computer?
Do you mind revealing the name of the disc? The processing of a DVD with any
of the programs you mentioned shouldn't impact on the sound as the sound is
part of the VOB file along with the video. Try playing one of the ripped
vobs in say media player classic or vlc and check if you have the full
soundtrack. Then burning can't impact selectively on a file. So maybe you
have a simple playback option problem?

Gosh Netmask, I feel a right wally
The DVD is The Mummy Returns and It DOESN'T play with correct sound on
my computer. I should have checked that before I started complaining

It's not my DVD, I was just gonna copy it for a relation
I'll have to try it in my DVD player and see how it performs

Thank you for you help

That disc was given to me for Xmas and there are a number of soundtrack
options including just the surround and fx! You will either have to use the
optical audio out from the DVD player to your amp or go into the DVD players
sound options to make the correct mix down audio to 2 channels etc. Using
DVDFab etc it's a matter of selecting the right track - I think from memory
80H ?
