How do I make an existing DVD-R play in ANY player
I made a DVD-R disc in my Polaroid recorder. It plays perfectly in the
recorder that made it--but in no other. How do I finalize it so that it
will play in an ordinary DVD player?

You need to 'finalize' the disk. It should be in the manual and the
menus.

can't find any manuals for recorders on polaroid's site. The option to
finalise should be in the menu, possibly under something like 'discs'
or such.

It's worth doing a Google/Yahoo search on your recorder's model number
plus 'finalise' (or 'finalize').
http://forum.videohelp.com definitely comes up with some info, although
it mainly seems to be about DVD+ disks. For one Polaroid recorder, there
are comments that you do need to read the manual carefully in order to
find the bit in the menu which you need.

Try:
While in monitor mode (watching TV) press SETUP on the remote then select
PLAY/EDIT DISC then FINALISE.
Some of the Polaroids are the same as my Tongtel DVR-0800 which was made by
Malata.

Ken Maltby is your man, Norm. I'm surprised he hasn't appeared by now?
He'll tell you how to "author" it. :-)

It only needs to be put back in the Polaroid and finalized, nothing else.

Since some (older) players accept only DVD-R, and some accept only DVD+R,
there is no DVD blank that can be played on any player.

My friend had a similar problem with his Polaroid recorder, so I did a
little research...
What model do you have? You might look at the manual for your
recorder. Apparently, some models will play DVD-R's (and DVD-RW's) but
will only record DVD+R's (or DVD+RW's).
For instance, from the specs of the Polaroid DRA-01601A: Real-time
recording using DVD+RW or DVD+R discs; Plays DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW
Some folks on www.videohelp.com
<http://forum.videohelp.com/topic305350-270.html> have mentioned this issue:
"...The second thing I learned is that the Polaroid generally does not
like DVD-R media. It will record and play them back (reluctantly, with
some features like YesDVD disabled), but the native format for the
Polaroid is DVD+R or DVD+RW. I can't prove it, but I believe that
forcing my unit to record on DVD-R disks caused damage to the burner."
