I have several DVD+RW discs that I can't erase; I can't erase them because
the erase program doesn't know it's an RW disc. Apparently, a program can't
erase a disc it doesn't recognize as an eraseable disc. Rather it thinks
the disc is a DVD-ROM.
Is there some program that will wrestle a DVD+RW back to the way it came
from the factory?

I don't know. Are you sure it is not a media problem? Poor quality
perhaps?
Why don't you try a number of different free programs which can erase
RW discs? Start with the portable ones. These sites have a lot of
portable software and show the home pages.

If it's the one and only disc, may be just a bad disc. Several older
discs turning problematic on newer equipment, or several of newer
discs turning problematic on older drives -- laser firmware and disc
dye mismatches may be at work. Also, brandnames -- when dealing in
+RW DVDs I buy Ridata and when I can't Maxell. Settled down from a
dollar now to a few years past for around 50-cent discs, I've several
hundred that are holding up for recycling burns from NEC burners to
now LG units. There's group forums that also go exhaustively into
related issues as well as address factory disc ID codes.

If you use a program that'll reveal it, check the Maxell disks to reveal
the actual manufacturer. You may get a surprise. Try it with TDK, too.

I know -- it's a marketing thing, whatever Chinese or Singapore
factory is convenient to offloading onto the greater integrity of
catch-phrase brandnaming. Not only for a major percentage of
distribution established through hard-earned names, such as TDK, I
coincidently discovered with compromised CD data from a similar so-
called no-nonsense name, long enough ago, perhaps they're as well best
left forgotten. The shift in capital marketing to globalism, mergers
and acquisitions, and off-shore sourcing, that translates by finer
gradients of printed hype from buyer beware into research is now
mandatory.
For a little more, RIMA.COM I guess still does it, double-checks
certification on their premium brands, Tayo Yuden, RITEK, or whatever
applies to manufacturing integrity. Pot-shot luck with these Memorex
I've bought (sorry, didn't mean Maxell when I typed it). No
significant issues from one of the major players when DVD+RW @x2
started up. I tend go Memorex second choice -- pricewise after
checking Newegg for deals on Ridata brand (embossed onto the top
layer) 50-disc +RW spindles.
DVD+RW (plus) discs do not require erasing.
Just record over the previously recorded material.
A new DVD+RW may need formatting if it has not already been pre-formatted.
These days most DVD+RWs fresh out of the box have already been formatted.
DVD-RW (minus) discs do need to be erased before you can record on them
again
( except for the 1st time right out of the box ) .
