Default Editing a .vob files

I'm very new to video & editing. I made a home video (created using Pinnacle
Studio 10), and due to a hard drive failure lost all the original files
downloaded off the camcorder. I now want to re-edit the original (in fact
just cut a section out) but I only have the DVD I made which has folders
Video_TS containing files with .vob extensions. Pinnacle will not import the
..vob files. Is there an inexpensive way of being able to use the DVD I made
in an editing program so I can cut a section of the film out?

Thanks in advance

If you just want to cut a section out MPEGStreamclip
http://www.squared5.com/ and is free. It has a basic editor window (mainly
designed for top and tailing and removing commercials) and it does a stream
copy and doesn't re-encode so it its very quick. It accepts VOB files and
whole lot other formats. It is available for PC and MAC users.

"...MPEG Streamclip is a powerful video converter, player, editor for Mac
and Windows. It can play many movie files, not only MPEGs; it can convert
MPEG files between muxed/demuxed formats for authoring; it can encode movies
to many formats, including iPod; it can cut, trim and join movies.
MPEG Streamclip can also download videos from YouTube and Google by entering
the page URL.
MPEG Streamclip is a converter for QuickTime files, MPEG-1/2/4 files and
transport streams (.ts and .m2t). It provides high-quality conversion of
movies and MPEGs into several useful formats. It is compatible with most
editing applications and DVD authoring tools. More details are available in
the download pages.

Supported input formats:
MPEG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD, VRO, DAT, MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, TS, M2T, MMV, REC,
VID, AVR, M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3, ...

You can use MPEG Streamclip to open and play most movie formats including
MPEG files or transport streams; edit them with Cut, Copy, Paste, and Trim;
set In/Out points and convert them into muxed or demuxed files, or export
them to QuickTime, AVI, DV and MPEG-4 files with more than professional
quality, so you can easily import them in a DVD authoring tool, and use them
with many other applications or devices....."

VOB2MPG (free):
http://www.svcd2dvd.com/downloads.aspx#VOB2MPG

This software will extract the mpg content of the vob and create a
single large mpg file. It doesn't re-render or otherwise affect the
content. You can use Pinnacle from there to cut out the section of interest.

Take the original files and change the extensions to .mpg. Studio will read
them just fine.

Copy the vob files to your computer. Once copied chane the file extension
(rename) from".vob" to ".mpeg". If Pinnacle Studio can import the mpeg files
you can re-edit the clips. Hope this helps.

Is there a limit to the length of an mpeg file? True VOB files aren't
supposed to be any longer than 1.048 GB or thereabouts. I have a VOB
file that is several GB long for some reason (actually, a program that I
paid good money for ******* me over, and the mfr refuses to help even
though they acknowledge the problem). If I rename it as mpeg, will it
play? Will DVDShrink or similar split it into legitimate VOBs?

I would try it myself except that the file is on another computer that
isn't isn't accessible to me at the moment.

Quick Answer. I don't know.

Some of the standard AVI files quickly reach 20 gigs and Studio handles
them, alright. I suppose there's a limit somewhere. I don't think file
size is a limitation. HOWEVER, Studio can get rather picky about the files
it will open, and a multi-gig vob file has a problem somewhere.

Try it. If it doesn't work, change the .mpg extension back to .vob and
you're no worse off.

The FAT32 file system has a 4GB file limit, but Windows NT/XP/Vista NTFS
has virtually no limit.

The DVD Shrink default _option_ is to split incoming files into 1GB chunks.

A DVD should have it's VOB files at 1GB or less. From the Microsoft
Support Web Site:

Cannot Play a DVD That Has a Large .vob File

Article ID : 295579
Last Review : January 31, 2007
Revision : 1.3

This article was previously published under Q295579

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a DVD, you may be unable to do so, and you may
receive an error message that relates to your third-party DVD decoder
program or your hardware Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) decoder.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the DVD you want to play contains a .vob file
that is too large. As of June 26, 2001, the most common file types that
are used by DVD manufacturers have a .vob or .dat file extension, and
the DVD-Video standard only allows single extent files. An extent
descriptor under the Universal Disk Format (UDF) standard can only
describe 1 gigabyte (GB), and larger files need more descriptors.

UDF uses a 32-bit integer as the size of an extent, the top two bits of
which are reserved, so there is a maximum extent size of 2^30 - 1. MPEG2
data is normally written a block at a time, and this means that the
block size is 2^30 (or 1GB-2KB). Because of this, if the .vob file size
is greater than or equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes (the block size), the
..vob file is not playable.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use Windows Explorer to view the size of a .vob file.

Cheerio,

Keith L

If you get hold of VSO ConvertXtoDVD it will accept the vob file no matter
how large as well as a whole range of other formats and author a standard
set of DVD format files (VIDEO_TS folder in which the VOB, IFO and BUP files
lives). This program will also automatically shrink to fit either a normal
DVD5 blank or a dual layer DVD9 blank
