Even though you may have a DVD drive on your computer, you might not have
the necessary software to play the DVD.

There are a number of commercial applications out there such as WinDVD,
PowerDVD,

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I asked the chap at my local computer shop and he recommended downloading a
free program called VLC. It works a treat.
Cheers

Wandering along the edges of alt.video.dvd.tech, I found the following

I, too, am unable to play a dvd rcorded on a Sharp DVR. In Explorer, the
dvd drive changes to "CD Drive" when this dvd is inserted - recorded
without title & chapter markings, I think, and yes, I finalized the dvd.
recorded using dvd+RW, dvr has 2 settings, VR and Video - recorded using
the Video setting.

Downloaded VLC, didn't work - "Play" triangle displayed with flashing
"Pause" symbol at 1 second intervals . . . .

any suggestions?
