Thanks for reminding me about this.
Turns out, it may be my user profile that is corrupted, so I'm going
to rebuild that. I found this out when an IT support person was
remotely logged into my system to install a new application. I told
him to watch something to see if he knew what it was. While he was
logged into my system remotely, using a remote user profile, these
applications launched perfectly. When he logged out, they would hang
again.
