Default Burning Speeds For DVDs and CDs

Hey all,

I was told that burning my DVDs or CDs at a slower speed makes for a
better burn.

With CDs I can burn them at 40x and DVDs at 16x, but does it make a
difference if I burn them at a slower speed?

Thanks,

jeff

Like most things technical, the definitive answer is "It depends."

Many combinations of motherboard, chipset, DVD/CD hardware, software and
media have problems with media burned at the highest speeds ... many do not.
The phenomenon seems more prevalent with DVDs.

You need to experiment with your particular system and find what works best
for you. Generally speaking, if everything in the chain comes from a
well-respected brand name manufacturer you'll have good luck with media
burned at the highest rated speed.

You'll find lots of good information at videohelp.com or doom9.org.

I reckon if I can burn "error free" at 40x/16x, then I should get even
better burns at 4X. I hope to come back to my discs 10 years later and
find that they are all still readable.

My recommendation is to burn your discs at the slowest possible speed
and give yourself peace of mind. You don't need to baby sit the
machine while it burns, so what difference does it make how long the
process takes?

BTW "error free" burns are not really error free.

Many high speed media are not optimized for recording at slow speeds. This
can lead to suboptimal burns at speeds far from the rated maximum of the
media. Also, the stability of drive speed is not always the best at the
slowest rotation. This can lead to high amounts of jitter which also
impacts on readability and recovery from read errors.

Some brands of DVDr's resulted in coasters when I burned them at "the
slowest possible speed." Now I try to match the burn speed to the
"verify" speed, which seems to be automatically set by my equipment.
Usually this means setting a burn speed of 4x or 8x, depending on the
brand of disk. I never had any problem with burning CDr's "too slowly."
Caveat: I am no expert and my equipment is five years old.

I've seen others make the same statement. However, I don't recall ever
seeing any quantitative results. It would be nice to have some K-Probe
test data. Unfortunately my LG burners aren't supported, otherwise I'd
experiment.

I would expect that pits and lands would be more sharply defined at
lower speeds, but that's only speculation. In any case, I would hope
that the PLL would automatically account for minor speed variations.
Having said that, I have seen faulty CD spin motors that exhibit
playability problems on the higher numbered tracks.
