Default audio/video sync

Last night we were watching a rental DVD of "Departed" and at times the
audio (lip) was badly out of sync with the video. I've noticed it before but
have ignored it as a DVD problem. I do know that the sync issue comes up
frequently with home edited material.

I'm wondering if this really is a rental DVD issue or a playback issue. The
DVD came from Hollywood Video; so I'm assuming it is a legal retail version.

I'm playing back the DVD via HDMI from an RCA DVR to a SONY LCD RPTV.

I'm thinking of going back to our old Panasonic DVD player that outputs only
480i because I don't remember any audio/video sync issues all the years we
used the Panasonic.

From a previous discussion in a different forum, I'm under the impression
that my
Sony will upconvert the 480i to 720P - the native Sony resolution. Is this
correct?

Wayne

Let me start by saying that I often confuse my humerus and my
derriere.

I believe, from reading and observation, that this is an
upscaling-buffering problem, in that video takes more time to
process than does audio and the more processing we ask of video
the more prone it is to losing synch with the audio. I first
observed it myself as I began to increase the bit-rate used in
creating xvid versions of captured TV episodes. Then, I noticed
that momentarily pressing reverse, as in reverse followed
immediately by play, would re-synch the a/v.

While it was a fix it was not really an acceptable solution and
I no longer use stand-alone DVD players. Some players were more
prone than others. The OPPO (I forget the model #) even had an
audio delay setting.

To date, I've not noticed this synch issue playing DVDs or
captured TV to a 1080p display from a relatively modern PC.
