I've never used any video editor. Have used slideshow editors.
Now I need to start a project where I build a dvd from bits & pieces
from other dvds. May be chapters of just marking a begin & end.
Would want to take the original sound track audio along too but have
the ability to overlay, and/or mask original audio, with comments &
music.
What software would you recommend? I only need s/w that supports a
basic cut & paste, with a short learning curve and want it to be
intuitive? (using vobs). Too much to hope?

I would check out the latest Womble Editing program,
I think they have multiple audio tracks now.
This is another post about "Ducking", so things could
easily get a little silly.
Another way to approach this is to use tools that let
you gather your DVD based clips, with their synched
audio, edit them into the movie you want, minus the
manipulation you want to do to the audio. Then output
as elementary streams (ES). Put the audio into Audacity
or something similar and do what you want to the audio,
being careful not to change the size or position of the audio
in the base track that came from the edited DVD clips.
Then you can mux that one track back to your movie.
Just adding it to the video in the DVD authoring will do
that.
if I just scrapped the whole audio mod requirement and just used
something/things that could "weld" audio & video into an entity for
cut & paste, do things get easier?
i am wiling to try your first suggestion if you think the interfaces
are appropriate. i'll spend 20 hours trying and learning so would help
if thing(s) oblige.
thanks for your insight.
ps
"Ducking" may have gone over my head.
thanks again
