Default video editing advice required...

I'd welcome a few ideas on How, and any recommended software to Do..

I'v been given a DVD of an aprox 2 hour Demo movie(product promotion),
and asked if I could take a segment of it and put on a separate DVD,
the segment is aprox half an hour - this part is all that's preferred
to be shown in the Biz for publicity of the product, that's straight
forward enough But - it's the next part I'm wondering what's the best
way to do it,,, and that's to take that half hour segement and cut it
down to about 10 minutes by, for example recording a couple of minutes
from each 5 minute -rather than show the entire 30 minutes, if I
were to play this DVD and record to a video recorder, I'd play,
record, and press pause once every 5 minutes, just to get the main
info, and end up with a 10 or so minute demo video... hope I'm
explaining it clear enough -
so how to do this on the PC, is there software that would let me
record as I play, and pause when I want, then continue recording -
just as though I were sending it to a video player, wouldnt want it
to create a new file every time I pause/record though.
Ideas would be appreciated to make this an easier process,
Thanks heaps.

First copy the DVD to your hard drive, it will make
things go much smoother. You don't really have to
though.

www.VideoReDo.com

They have a free trial download.

Couldn't get much easier than that.

Luck;
Ken

Hmmm... When you said you were "given a DVD"
I assumed that you were talking about a normal "video
DVD" authored with a "VIDEO_TS" folder and .vob
files. VideoReDo can open such a "DVD" from its
VIDEO_TS folder and extract the tracks that are there.

A "normal" video DVD is made of .vob (Video Object)
files, that have MPEG2 video streams, Audio streams and
other data. Many programs will read the first set of video
and audio streams and treat it as a MPEG Program/System
file (.mpg). (That is why some say to just change the file's
extension to .mpg, and why it often works.)

VideoReDo can read the DVD and .vob files directly.

If the files are some other form of video you should post
what they are; WMV, DivX, mov, DV25, flv, whatever.
Don't just say .avi, if they are .avi files then use a utility
like "GSpot"

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

to identify the type of audio and video inside the .avi files.

Luck;
Ken

Hi, thanks, and yep - VOb files.
but on emore question - I noticed on the ViseoReDo site, it showed a
"storyboard" of a movie.. enabling yu to select a frame(s) and
delete, as a way of trimming unwanted frames from the movie - on
testing the program - I don't see how to get this feature up and
running.... do I have to somehow convert? or something or other to
have this come up, I reckon that method would be really good and easy
to use, cos you get to see the scene clearly for what needs to be
removed.
being able to view the scene along an image timeline, would make it
so easy to SEE the portion you want to remove.
thanks again...
regardless of that - the VideoReDo prog' sure does look good!
Stuart.

Stuart.

You seem to be talking about the "Show Thumbnails"
feature (F11 key toggles it off and on.) It's under the
"View" tab, as well. Or you can right-click on the
display and select "Toggle Thumbnail View".

You should check out the Navigation settings available,
you can tailor it to however you want. (I have my Mouse
Wheel move it one frame at a time and to I-Frames when
using the wheel with the shift key pressed, as well.

Then I can scrub (using the slider) to the general area,
use the shifted mouse wheel to note the GOP structure in
the area of the intended cut, and use the unshifted wheel
to pick the actual frame to cut on.

[The mouse wheel actions will be the same as for the
keyboard arrow key settings.]

The latest version of the program has "Open Title from a
DVD..." as an option under the "File" tab. With that, you
won't need to work with the individual .vob files. In any
case you won't have to convert anything, to do the edit
you described.

Click on the "Help" tab and select "Contents", that will
get you started.

Luck;
Ken

out - seems t'was th eother way round.. but~ I'm getting there.
cheers, n thanks.
