Default how to record streaming video ?

Is it possible to record streaming video to the hard drive as an mpg
file?

I'm thinking of things like NetFlix online movies, YouTube, etc.
Anything that normally calls up the Windows Media Player.

I am using MSIE 7.0. I've downloaded the YouTube thing and will
experiment with it -- but it seems to say it saves the file in AVI
format. Not sure what that is. I have a program that puts mpg files
onto a DVD that will play on my set top DVD player into my TV. Don't
know yet if it will handle AVI input.

You'll find no problems converting .avi.

In looking at that YouTube program -- it wants you to input a URL of
the video that you want to stream to hard drive. My intended use
would be with instant movies such as supplied by Netflix -- and I don't
think that there is a URL there. They just start streaming them to your
viewer.

In that case you will have to the Firefox browser with the appropriate
add-on for downloading streaming video.

Look here:

Thanks -- I did take a look at Firefox. Did not really find any add-
on for streaming video other than for capturing YouTube things.

In addition, I have discovered that in the application I was wondering
about (NetFlix), in order to view the video movie one has to install a
software application that is proprietary to them. I suspect that they
do not want one to record, and have blocked that. Since it is not easy
to record and probably against their EULA, I am going to give up on the
idea unless I hear otherwise.
