I have two computers and in backing up my Mama Mia DVD with DVD Shrink I'm
getting different results from them. Both have Nero 8.
Started off using new computer (based on Vista, 2 dual-layer DVD drives) -
and opting for copying the whole disk, with compression set to automatic,
copied to a single layer DVD disk. The end result will play fine on the PC,
but not in my DVD player to view on the TV. Likewise copied main film only -
copied to a single layer DVD that plays fine on PC, but not on standalone.
Then tried with old computer (based on XP, 2 dual-layer DVD drives) - opting
again for copying the whole disk, with compression set to automatic - and it
wouldn't write to a single-layer DVD disk - just said not enough room. I put
a dual layer disk in, and it copied across, and the result will play in both
PC and standalone DVD layer onto TV.
So how come Shrink copies to a single-layer disk on one computer, but says
not enough room on another one?
And why doesn't the single layer disk play on my standalone player?

wasted,
When DVDShrink compresses a DVD it writes the newly compressed video files to a
file on the hard drive and then burns these compressed video files to the new
blank DVD. When DVDShrink gripes about not having enough room to write its
files it's griping about lack of available space on the hard drive (not about
lack of space on the new blank DVD media that you're using). Apparently the
hard drive on your old 'puter is getting crowded.
My -=*guess*=- is that when you changed to dual layer media (so no compression
was actually used) your old 'puter (having 2 dual-layer drives) just copied
on-the-fly from DVD drive to DVD drive without needing to write a file to the
hard drive so that you did not get the "not enough room" message.
As to why DVDs burned on your new Vista 'puter won't play on your stand alone
DVD player (and those burned on your old XP computer will), maybe someone else
can help you. (I assume that you're using the same DVD media: DVD+R, DVD-R,
whatever, in both computers.) One of the DVDShrink "burn settings" calls for
burning in "high compatability mode." Do you have that checked on both 'puters?

Thanks for the reply, but
a) the hard disk on the old computer has masses of space - Shrink had copied
the files to that disk quite successfully (they are still there) and the
lack of space message definitely related to the DVD drive.
b) both versions of Shrink have the high compatibility mode selected.

Wrong about the computer's hard drive being full. I ran across a DVD last
week that said there wasn't enough room to do the rip. It meant that there
wasn't' enough room on the single sided disc. For some reason shrink would
only compress down to 92%. I am not sure what I did but played around with
the program and it then said it would compress enough to fit on the single
sided disc.
Never used a dual layer but seeing how shrink works it always puts files on
the computer after ripping before putting the files onto the blank DVD.

I had a similar problem with having Nero 7 essentials on the computer so
Shrink sees my burners and Nero 9 for all other functions. If I only have 9
on the machine Shrink won't see my burners. Anyway I had to change what of 7
was installed on my machine. I had to change from Nero Smart to Nero
Essential and then when I burned the discs would play on any player. The
strange thing about this when the discs only played on the computer. If I
took the pc files of the disc and burnt them onto the DVD using Nero 9 the
disc would play fine on a stand alone machine.
