Default Dual Layer ripping problem. Need help.

Hi.

Newbie Alert!

I'm trying to make a backup copy of "The Nativity Story". It's a dual
layer DVD.

I used DVD Decrypter v. 3.5.4.0 to copy it to the hard drive using ISO
Read mode. I then burned it to DVD+R DL 2.4x media by Verbatim using
CDBurnerXP v. 4.0.013.220 using the "Burn Disc From ISO" function. The
drive is an LG [HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B].

I used CDBurnerXP because, when I tried to use DVDD in ISO Write mode,
it complained about the blank media. It was late, I was tired and just
wanted to get it done. Today, another disk from the same package does
not give the error -- curious!

Anyway, the problem is:
When I play it in my DVD player on the TV, it gets a few minutes into
the movie, then starts to "pause". By that I mean it just stops
playing for a few seconds (freezes on one frame), then advances a few
more frames and pauses again. However, when I play it on the PC in
full screen or wide screen mode it plays fine.

I have a bunch of questions and I'm looking for advice.
Does this behaviour sound familiar?
Is it some kind of copy protection?
Or could it be that my DVD player can't handle dual layer properly?
Did I use the wrong settings in DVDD?
If so, what should I change?
Should I use some other software? Which? (Obviously free is prefered)

Any advice welcomed.

As I understand it, DL DVD burning is a hit and miss affair at
best, having the lowest compatibility rating amongst burners and
players. Add to that, that DVD readers have different specs and
that the error recovery strategy of a stand alone DVD player is
different from the error recovery strategy of a PC based DVD
reader. Actually, if the disc merely contained errors, I'd have
expected the PC to "pause" and the stand-alone to pixilate but
seldom pause. Therefore, I'm guessing that the stand-alone is
not too compatible with the burner, and that when you played the
DL DVD on the PC, you played it in the DVD burner?

The answer might be:
a) try another blank disc
b) try another stand-alone player
c) skip the joy of dealing with dual layer blank media

The best resource for burning DVD9 (which is what DL really is)
that I've found is this one:

http://www.imgburn.com/

It burns DLs perfectly (even titles the disc for you!).

And the best thing about it is that is free AND complete!

Ripp the DVD to the harddrive with
DVDFab HD Decrypter - http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

Burn the ripped DVD from the harddrive to a disc with
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/

If you want to shrink the ripped dvd on your harddrive first then use
DVD Rebuilder Freeware Edition - http://www.jdobbs.com/
or
DVD Shrink - http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...k/1050004458/1

ImgBurn can only burn disc images, right? Not VIDEO_TS files.

Wrong :-)
Go up to the ImgBurn menu "Mode" and chage it to "Build"
now you can burn VIDEO_TS files

"Burning DVD Video files directly to single layer media with ImgBurn"
http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4632

"How to write DVD Video (IFO/BUP/VOB) files to a double layer disc"
http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4643

And you can also convert mp3 files and make a true audio cd (CDA) disc

"How to burn an Audio CD from music files using ImgBurn"
