The player is defaulting to the wrong audio stream.
Press the "audio" or "language" button on your player.

Well....I tried what you suggested.
I have three standalones- a Panasonic, an Apex, and an RCA.
The Apex remote no longer works, so I can't do much with it.
The other two have remotes that do work and do have a button called
'audio'.
When I press it on the RCA, I get very little to work with. The RCA
tells me 1.1:AC3 2CH, and the manual says to press the audio button
for other choices. I did that, and nothing happened.

look in your actual settings, see if there are audio settings you can
mess with. You may have it set for surround when it should be stereo
or such.

It is probably the codec used to encode the audio to the DVD.
I seem to recall that some older DVD players have problems with mpeg audio.
Try reencoding using one of the NTSC DVD templates with your authoring
program

Yes, but Apexes (which supported VCD and MPEG audio from the start) would
not be expected to show this problem with the OP's discs.
