Also, I used to be able to burn and read back DVD-R discs in this same
system. Lately, something happened and it does not let me read back some
DVD-R discs.
I test with a DVD-ROM movie and this DVR drive play the movie fine.
Is there anyway I can test the system?

The drive is probably not being reset properly after the burn. Try
shutting down and restarting, then see if you can read the burned
disc. If you can read the disc afterwards, then this problen is
confirmed. To fix it, first, uninstall Nero 5.5 and then, second,
install Nero 6.6.1.15a and the problem will go away. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nero_Burning_Rom_d633.html

Did you modify the dvd write strategy to get x1 burn speed?
I never had much luck improving burn quality by changing dvd write
strategy in the firmware.

I have experienced this before with crappy Optodisc dvd+rw's. Sounds
like it could be marginal media to me, bet your not using taiyo yuden
dvd-r's. Or it could be the drive's read laser is weaking and going
south.
Luckily the Pioneer DVR 106D does nero cdspeed quality test (pie and
pif errors), you can verify the quaility of your burned media and if
its filled with errors. A marginal disk, a thumbprint could cause
enough additional errors to make the disk un-readable. http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ http://www.isobuster.com/

Actually, I have tried around 5 different brands of DVD-R media. From
expensive TDK & HP blank disc to cheapies. I have alrady tried write at x1,
x2, x4. Same results. I have asked my friends to write a DVD-R in his
system. I am unable to read it in mine. But this drive can play back DVD-ROM
movies fine.
Do you think I have software of hardware problem? From your answers, you
seems to think I have hardware DVR-106D drive problem? This is my second
Pioneer drives. Is Pioneer DVR internal drive has so much problems? What is
better choice and reasonable price?

Jim, the drive just unable to see the presence of DVD-R media. I can see the
drive spins. So cannot run CD speed tests.
It reads DVD-ROM disc fine. This is Nero speed test using the DVD-ROM disc.
