I have a Panasonic E85 and it has been wonderful. In the past
few days however the TV Guide of the programs has no information.
This has been at least 3 days. I've done the reset to
zip 00000, turned it off, waited, turned it back on and entered
the correct zip code - as this was what I found to be the
way to reset when I had a previous brand of DVR.
Where does the information come from? Is it from a particular
station, or is it something that is in the cable feed.
I was wondering if BrightHouse [Orlando] may be filtering this out
so that users would get their DVR?

Is there not a forced download for TV guide? The way yours works
sounds so different from the UK. Have you tried actually unplugging
the machine for a while then plugging it back in?
Never read anything about your routine of resetting the zipcode an cycling
power and re-entering it in the E85 manual. You do realize that the unit
only downloads tv guide information when it is off and it can take up to 24
hours to download it all.
I have BrightHouse (Tampa) and an E85 and have no problems with it's TV
Guide.

I'm pretty sure I've read its on the local PBS channel.
As others have mentioned, and this to me is the biggest drawback to that
whole system, it only updates if the unit is off. Doesn't matter if it's a
tv with it built in or a DVR, if you leave it on all or most of the time,
it's just not going to update.
Although I doubt the local cable company is doing it on purpose, at least to
get you to buy their service, it's possible the retransmission of the PBS
channel is bad.
I beleive (again from something I read a while back), the data is
transmitted near the "top lines" of the picture where the VIB and closed
captioning is, like before line 21. Is the main reason it "could take up to
24 hours to update", the baud rate is about as fast as closed captioning or
slightly worse.
Many cable systems use an outside contractor to pick up local stations and
feed them "somehow" to the head end. That "somehow" might be part of the
problem, especially if they went cheap and are compressing the video along
with other channels. From what I understand, there is usually a agreement
they don't do anything with the PBS feed because besides the tvguide data,
they are usually the local channel that supplies the time feed. Thats the
one used by many video products that can auto-set the time.
So I'd guess if you are turning your unit off nightly, maybe they switched
PBS channels to another station or like I said, maybe did something to the
distribution where those pre-picture video lines are being lost.

Oh yes, it's been OFF. I ran across the resetting the zip code
when I had an older Philips. After a day or so of nothing, I did
the 00000 zip code, turned it off for 5 minutes, and then turned
it back on. Then going to the display section it comes up with the
standard first time setup. So far I've not have anything for 5
days. A real PITA.
So - where does the info come from. I'd heard that it is from a
PBS station - but is that true? I wonder if BH in Orlando is
doing something different. I've had problems with them lately.
A tech came to the house and I was able to show him the drop outs
and freezes that got recorded. He checked everything and said it
was a system problem. When i reoccurred a few days later I called
and they said they have to send a tech to my house, and I tole them
that had been done and the previous tech said it was a system
problem. She insisted she had to send a tech, at that point I got
POes, and hung up.
There have been a LOT of freezes and often audio out of sync
lately. Last year it was so bad that the local TV station ran a
report on it and BH said it would get fixed. It's realy spotty, so
that's why I was wondering if BH was filtering this - perhaps in
order to get people to use their own DVR.

A follow-up to my own post.
I've unplugged the system for 5 minutes and went through the
setup again. I was thinking that perhaps something on internal
memory might be fubared so that removing the power might cure this.
I'll let you know the result. If it works it's something to
remember.

I'm not sure about what channel the info comes from but it may be a PBS
station, I know that's how most boxes get their time. I doubt if
BrightHouse is filtering anything to for people to their boxes. I can tell
you why I feel that way just from my own experience with them. About 8
months ago our 27" crt style tv in our family room went out. I decided to
upgrade to an lcd. When I did the channel search it had discovered around a
dozen or more digital channels. I only had analog cable at the time along
with RR. The locals in HD looked so good on the new set that I decided to
investigate going to digital. I did everything via email and to make a long
story short I now have an HDDVR. The kicker is that my cable bill went down
$6.00 a month. I think a lot of that has to do with Verizon installing FIOS
and getting their customers. You may want to check with BH in Orlando.

Here are the results. No downloads of TV-Guide for 5 days. I even
reset the zip code as I'd seen recommended by Philips when it would
not download.
Yesterday I removed the power from the unit - not just power off -
let it sit for a bit over 5 minutes, re-entered all the setup
information, and voila!! This morning all the TV-Guide was
back in place. I was thinking it might be BH because they have
been so spotty lately.
So file this away - that worst case problem is to remove the power
from the machine by taking the power plug out.

yes, pbs and a smattering of other stations will broadcast a time stamp
on the vertical retrace. This is nice for a player so the time is
alwayss flashing 12:00 at you!
