I like to be able to play the DVDs I have, and have recorded, on my
computer. I use Windows Media Player.
I bought a new DVD recorder and encountered a strange problem when
trying to play the DVDs on my computer. They will =only= play - I am
unable to skip through the DVD using the slide bar in Windows Media
player. I can't jump around in the disc and play just the scenes I
want ot play. The same problem exists when I try to play the DVD in
Real Player, too,
The recorder is a Phillips 3475 (also had the same problem with a
no-name generic recorder from WalMart, so I returned it and got the
Phillips thinking the name brand wouldnt' have the problem, but it
did).
I have lots of DVD's that other people have recorded for me, both plus
and minus, as well as commercial DVD's and I have never had this
problem playing them in Windows Media player. I can skip around and go
back and forth as much as I want. I am currently using Windows Media
Player 10.0
Any idea what's wrong? I have to assume it's something in the
recorder, since other DVDs will play just fine in my computer.

Yes, they are all finalized. You see , they all play, no problem. But
I want to be able to jump around on the disc, to jump at random from
scene to scene. I cna't seem to do that with the discs recorded off
this Phillips (and the WalMart knockoff). They will =only= play. When
I try to move the slide bar to jump ahead, the slide bar snaps back to
where it was playing. I can't move it around.

Well, I just shoved a disc i recorded this evening on my panasonic
recorder and sure enough in windows media player I can move the bar
around as much as I like.
As someone suggested if you have a copy of Cyberlink Powerdvd you
could try that as it has a reputation better than media player for dvd
playing on a computer and often if not always comes free with a new
dvd drive.

The cause is that the recorder sets the "Prohibited User Operations",
"Time Play or Search" flag.
I have seen this with DVD+RW/+R discs recorded both with Philips and
Sony (which is based on Pioneer) recorders.
I don't know the reason. Maybe it can give problems on some players if
it was allowed. Anyway, I have cleared the flag on several recordings
and haven't seen any side effects. I use IFOEdit to do this.
I copy all the file structure from the DVD to computer, use IFOEdit
and burn back to DVD.
I don't know if it is limited only to DVD+RW/+R discs but I have seen
a DVD-R recording (from a camera recorder) that did allow time search.
A safe variant is to rip the content and author to a new disc.

Addition:
A second thought is if you don't see the chapter marks on the computer
that you edited on the recorder, and you use DVD+RW discs, that should
be corrected by using a "make compatible" command on the recorder.
This should enable the computer to see and jump between the edited
chapter marks. (Skipping with slide bar is still not possible.)

How do I clear that flag? Do I do it in the recorder or on the
computer?
I picked up an inexpensive Panasonic recorder this afternoon (it uses
minus DVDs) and tried it out and wonder of wonders, it played
perfectly when I put it in my computer. So there's something in the
software of the Phillips and the WalMart knock-off that prevents the
DVD from being fully accessible by WMP.
I wish the fix hadn't required me to get a different recorder. Oh
well.

Do you have your recorder set to automatically create chapters at set
intervals?

On the computer.
I copy the VIDEO_TS folder to computer HDD,
Start IFOEdit
Open the file Video_TS.ifo
Click VMG_PTT_SRPT
The value in "Title x Playback Type" shall be shanged from 21 to 20.
(This is to clear the LSB so if your recordings have another odd value
it shall be rounded off downwards to an EVEN value.)
Save the file.
Open the file VTS_01_0.ifo
Expand VTS_PGCITI
in VTS_PGC_1: doublelklick "Prohibited User Operations" and clear
"Time Play or Search".
I usually have only one title on these discs (otherwise I author a new
menu system anyway. But if you have several titles I think you have to
repeate for all VTS_01_x.ifo files and I think you could use the
button in IFOEdit that removes all prohibits for all titles at once.
Save the file(s).
I then use Nero Burning ROM in DVD Video mode to burn the VIDEO_TS
folder to DVD.
By this method the menu system (from the recorder) is preserved.

I'm not familiar with your Philips recorder but if it takes DVD-RW you
could test to see if that makes a difference.

Well, as long as it can be solved by a reasonable amount of money ...
and you don't miss any features that came with the old recorder
