**I have that model. I just used the composite (red-white-yellow)
connectors to hook it up to the Cablevision box. I run it out of the
box into the Tosh and then out to the TV from the Tosh. Pretty basic.

I just picked up a Panasonic DMR-EA18. The pluses to this model are
the IR blaster and Flex Record. No cable coax on this model either.

As others have pointed out, the recorder does not have a tuner. The CNET
review of it lists only S-Video and composite video inputs. Probably
what you thought was a coax input is actually the S-Video input. You
will need a cable box, satellite box, or some other source for your
recordings.

No, it's the coaxial digital audio output, as posted elsewhere in this
thread. It's in the manual, even.

The OP seemed to be unfamiliar with the concept, and my post really
didn't clarify it, so I hope he Googled to find out more :-)

While I'm here - I just looked at the manual again to see if the
recorder provides for an IR blaster so that it can control an outside
tuner. Sadly, no. However, it can be set to record at a specified time
and duration; it also has something called Satellite Link, which will
start to record when it detects an external signal.

So you can do this: set the Toshiba to record at a given time and on a
given input, and set the external tuner to turn on to the desired
channel at the time in question (my satellite receiver will do this,
IIRC). Or one can set the Toshiba to Satellite Link and set the
external tuner to turn on as described.

I just realized that my comment above about using Satellite Link with
my satellite receiver is wrong, but for a funny reason.

When my satbox is in standby, it still outputs a signal with
instructions on how to watch TV, plus ads for PPV and such, running as
a sort of screen saver (they move around the screen and change content
periodically), so the DVR wouldn't know when the box came out of
standby.

With any luck, other set-top boxen wouldn't do that.

I think I gotta just use it as a player hooked up to a source DVD
recorder and spring for a new DVD recorder for recording off the TV
otherwise I'll drive myself crazy. It's not necessarily (sp.?) useless
to people who don't know how to hook it up to their TV's since it can
format some discs -RW discs that my Panasonic DVD recorder doesn't
read.
