LG GSA H12N which is fastest writing dvd-r media for this burner?

Hi,

I have recently bought a LG GSA H12N. I have been trying burning
verbatim tayo yuden 16x. These burn most of the way at 13x. Which is
fastest writing dvd-r media for this x18 burner? Is it worth changing
the firmware to make it burn quicker?

Firmware can make a drive go slower which brings down the error rates.
Quite a few brands often update the firmware which brings the speed
down a bit to get more reliable burns.

The latest LG drive which gets up to 18X and burns faster than any
drive from any brand before it, is the LG H42N. These burn certain 16X
media in just under 5 minutes for a full disc burn.

I wouldn't advise burning faster than 16X as the PIE/PIF rates start
to climb by quite a bit which is asking for troubles and only saves
about 30 seconds in burn time.

I've done tests for PIE/PIF on Orion DVD-R 16X, Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 16X
and Verbatim DVD-R 16X on the Pioneer DVR-112D, Sony-NEC 170A and some
other older 16X burners and the clear winner for the lowest error
rates is the latest Pioneer DVR-112D with firmware 1.15
