I have a problem with my DVD writer in my PC. This is a drive can also burn
CD's and I don't have a problem with that. However, whenever I insert a
blank DVD-R, it does not recongize it. I tried putting a DVD movie and it
also does not recognize it. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

That usually means the DVD laser has died, and the best bet is to buy a
new drive. They are amazingly cheap these days, fortunately.
Since DVDs and CDs use two different wavelengths of light, they have
two independent lasers in the read/write head, and one can die before
the other one does.

My computer is brand new and I thougth it was just an configuration deal.
Is there a diagnostic software that I can run to test whether the laser is
dead or not??

If your drive won't read *commercial* CDs and/or DVDs, I'd say contact
the manufacturer's tech support department and get a warranty
replacement.
