I'd appreciate hearing from someone who has bought a unit recently that will record from either of DVD or VHS to other. I saw several at Circuit City the other day under $300, and quite a few under $200. Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, and others.
I'm not looking for the very best quality recording -- the main thing is ease of use since this will be for an elderly fellow.

A warning. If you are wanting to record pre-recorded movies from tape
to dvd then you would be better using separate machines as you would
probably need something in between to remove the macrovision stuff.
I have owned a Sharp and a Panasonic, both a little while ago. I would
say the Sharp was better value but the dvd images seemed to stutter a
little (this was a few years ago though) The panasonic's dvd side was
great, as most of theirs are, but the VHS section was rough, picture
not good, mechanical sound was very very loud, a hum so loud it was
distracting when watching stuff on it.
Last TV/VCR combo I bought was Panasonic. Used to be top of the line, but this one was not that good. Biggest complaint was that the remote is REALLY not intuitive. Even after using it for 2 years, I never can remember how to display the time and recording program. Never had that trouble with any over unit before or since.

well, I have to say I don't like their controls either. we've had four
or five different ones and they have always moved stuff around just
enough to annoy you.
