My suggestion is a dvd recorder with hard disc. I am assuming you
already have a VHS machine. hook them up together, record to the hard
drive then edit the tapes as you wish on the hard drive, hopefully
then using the fast copy to burn them to disc.

Remember that the longer the recording you make the worse the
condition of it, so just as with VHS you really want to steer away
from long recordings.

Yep, have to agree, as long as money isn't tight. Even then with a
good look around the net etc there are reasonable prices.

As Darrel advised, Panasonic are probably the favourites. Go for the
biggest hard disc you can afford, you'll almost certainly not regret
it. I wouldn't waste my time on the machines that also have a built in
VHS as they are bigger than the other machines and the VHS deck will
not be as good as any stand alone VHS you have.

Wow! I've been checking prices and guess I won't be buying this right
now. Thanks for your help though.

Depends what you need, I know one of the
suggestions was a recorder with a hard
drive but I have a non-hard drive Panny
unit that's been with me for years and
I've never found myself wishing for one
and those units are probably cheaper than
those with a hard drive.

**Is Wayne in the US? If so, good luck finding a good, brand name DVD
recorder with a hard drive. I think he'll have a choice of Philips,
RCA, Polaroid and Magnavox. Please check out reviews for these
products first, the Philips gets skewered on Amazon. At J&R, there is
a multi-system Pioneer available but I think it's kinda gray market.

I was looking at recorders on Amazon. Check out the used prices on
recorders with hard drives. I have a Panasonic e85 and it's selling
for $300 more *used* than I paid for it new. Sheesh!
