1000% surely I will be returning this unit. I have already started
missing the Panasonic 15 recorder a little bit
I think I will wait for the Panasonic's HDD recorder's price to drop a
little bit then get one to have a try. Hopefully it won't dissapoint
me
By the way the RF unit is the most difficult part in the modern
electrical devices to design. One gap between two parts can easily
became an air capacity. So the RF unit can reflect the manufactuer's
technical developent capability big time. Panasonic apparently has a
lot of experience in RF design.

They have had a lot longer than LG to get things right :O)
There seem to be some new panasonics coming along so keep your eye out
for price drops.

Burning smell -- is this typical of DVR's in general?
I'm curious what was your subsequent experience with this problem because I'm not going thru the same. I just had a brand new Motorola DCH3416 HD Dual Tuner DVR installed by Time Warner Cable in Los Angeles. It records 2 shows at once while allowing you to view one of them & seems to work just fine. However, I soon noticed a strange odor emanating from the DVR which I can only describe as similar to burning rubber or plastic. I really noticed it when I came home & the unit had been working with the doors & windows closed. Very strong & noxious odor. The unit does not seem to be more than a little warm to the touch. Is this phenomenon a normal part of breaking-in a new DVR? Does anyone know what this is? Should I be concerned about danger of fire? Or toxic fumes? you? Also, I suspect this problem might be endemic to DVR's in general. Could this be the case?

I recommend that you unplug it and call Time-Warner. Also check
that your fire insurance is up to date. You might also feel around
the box (and the power brick, if any) for hot spots.

Was it really hot inside? (A/C off?)

No! At least not the ones I've had.

A fire insurance claim waiting to happen? Or perhaps just impending
failure of the power supply.

Yes.

Yes.

I doubt it. I think I have experienced that sort of thing when
plugging in and using an old CRT TV after it had been accumulating
years of dust. But not with any of the three DVRs I've had (two Tivo,
one Panasonic).

Well, unless you lets your imaging runs wild thinking burning means using
torch or fire to heat something. Or the term "burn" in DVD world uses laser
beam to burn a thin layer of marterial in between 2 layers of plasic. So
even if it burns with fire you shouldn't be able to smell the burn.
But
- If you smell some unpleasure smell then it's possible that it's the
chemical uses on the disc. And you should be able to smell (stronger smell)
right after to open the plasic wrap.
- If you really smell the burn, then it's probably your DVD and I don't
think the DVD or your computer can survive some short circuit.
