I had already tried this, and searching for "DVD+R" mostly returns
results like DVD R and DVD-R instead, at least with Google.

Yeah, I think it uses the + sign as an actual instruction, placing it
in front of a word means to definitely include that word in the
search. Obviously they don't think of when someone genuinely needs to
look for something with + in the search.

You use the term that you "pronounce": DVDplusR or DVDplusRW

I'm sure that used to work.
Seems Google have removed the requirement for a space before the + when used
as an operator.
